You’ve got to feel for Paul Nardella, Director of On Track Lighting, popping into our Melbourne branch for a social visit and leaving with the unexpected purchase of 32 ShowPRO/EK Lights Cyber Beams! Let’s face it, the Cyber Beam is pretty hard to resist with its impressive 34,000 lux at 8 metres.
“I walked into the showroom one day and they had this little light on the table and I was like, oh what is that toy?” commented Paul. “I turned it on, and its power blew me away. I said, ‘Wait here. I’m going to go to my factory to pick up one of my Martin Rush MH4 beam lights so we can compare them side by side.’ Keep in mind that the MH4 has a 132-watt lamp, and this new fixture is a 50-watt LED. There should be no comparison, but it was way brighter than the MH4!”
Named the Cyber Beam, the fixture features a 50W engine that delivers a 2.3° tight beam angle, combined with a 110mm front lens, to produce a solid, consistent beam for precise illumination. And this is all without compromising on the creative aspect: the design features a 14-filter colour wheel for vibrant options, an 8-facet prism for stunning effects, and heavy frost capability.
The Cyber Beam’s compact size and light weight also attracted Paul, as many of his moving fixtures are large and he can’t use them on everything. At 7kgs, the Cyber Beam can easily be handled by one person and is ideal for venues with weight limitations in the roof.
“It’s convenient, you can roll into somewhere with two people and hang 32 fixtures in less than an hour, whereas if you’re lifting 38 kilo lights by the time you hang 32, you’re knackered,” he commented.
Paul ran his Cyber Beams alongside his ShowPRO Pluto 2000 Wash, fearing they might not keep up with the amount of lumens that Pluto puts out, but he reports that this was no problem. He is also impressed by just how quiet they run, even though that’s not relevant to the gigs that he normally does!
“Their infinite pan and tilt, and the speed is incredible, I don’t even think there’s a light on the market that’s faster, to be honest,” added Paul. “We do a lot of high BPM dance parties, so the MH1s are great, but they’re slow. The Cyber Beams are so fast, it’s like they’re ending the beam!”
Paul has no regrets about his impulse purchase and has already used his Cyber Beams at a big dance party at the Melbourne Museum, with them pencilled in for some exciting upcoming events. The final testament – as the busy summer season gets underway, he plans to purchase another 32 Cyber Beams!
